Wicked KL in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is an inventive collaboration between three affluent directors, Benson Tay of Focus Dynamics Group Berhad, Dion Tan of Tropicana Corporation Berhad and Morvin Tan of Berjaya Corporation Berhad. Located on the 12th floor of Kuala Lumpur’s latest luxury hotel chain, W Kuala Lumpur, the nightclub offers a vibrant, new-age style of partying for visitors.
Nights at Wicked KL are like no other in the city, with an incredible array of the best international and local DJs that is constantly being updated. Every night of the week, the music has been specially curated to showcase the latest in the music scene, with huge beats and sounds getting club-goers in the mood as soon as they enter the spectacular venue.
Weekly DJs spin the latest tunes from Tuesday through to Sunday, with themed nights – Lucid Dream Sundays (funky house); Bootie Mashtronix Tuesdays (deep house music); Boom Bap Wednesdays (hip hop and R&B); Lui Lui Thursdays (throwback tunes); Bang Fridays (open format); and Sin City Saturdays (EDM anthems).
With such a range of themed nights and events, it was vital that Wicked KL had a state-of-the-art audio system that delivered high-quality, flexible sound. Visitors expect an extraordinary experience in which they can go on a journey of musical exploration through the night, so it had to deliver.
The responsibility for installing a new audio system that would work perfectly for Wicked KL was with MotifV8 Projects, a leading distributor and consultancy.
“MotifV8 Projects was first contacted regarding Wicked KL by M Group Entertainment’s Director, DJ Ken Kang, who first noticed the Void Acoustics Tri Motion loudspeaker at an installation we had done previously in Kuala Lumpur,” explained Sham Iskhander, Director of MotifV8 Projects. “He was looking for a something new and totally different for a premium club project.
“Ken wanted to have the Void Acoustics Air Series range of loudspeakers installed at Wicked KL – he was keen to have the cool, amazing-looking loudspeakers in red to match the interior.”
For the project, there were three separate sections that needed to be covered by the loudspeakers; an exclusive VIP area located behind the DJ, the main dancefloor complete with premium seating and the bar area just as guests arrive through the main entrance.
“We proposed two Void Acoustics Tri Motion loudspeakers for the dancefloor, with two Air Vantage loudspeakers for front of house. Elsewhere, four Void Acoustics Airten loudspeakers were deployed in the VIP and bar areas,” added Sham.
“For the subwoofers, we chose two Stasys Xair from Void Acoustics at the front and two Nexus XLs at the rear of the main dancefloor.”
The DJ monitors are also from Void Acoustics, with Point One boxes and clear perspex construction used.
“Ken wanted to have the latest state-of-the-art technology for Wicked KL as it’s a premium club within a high-end hotel,” said Sham. “Void Acoustics offer unique and visually striking loudspeakers, which are ideal in terms of the theme of the nightlclub. Stepping into Wicked KL is like being in an exclusive spaceship.”
Void Acoustics Bias Q2 and V9 amplifiers – which come with all the presets and settings optimised for the loudspeakers – are also used. The amplifiers use Armonia software, too, which was used for EQ adjustments and monitoring.
A Bose ControlSpace ESP-4120 processor is utilised for signal compression, line input and output matrix routing to send audio signals to the amplifiers, as well as for zone controls for the venue.
Paired with lasers, lighting, LED displays and visual effects, the new Void Acoustics audio system has been an impressive addition to Wicked KL, enhancing the experience and making it the go-to nightlife venue in Kuala Lumpur.
