The Department of Eure—wanted to anchor the Domaine d’Harcourt, a millennium-old estate featuring a preserved medieval castle and arboretum, into the 21st century. The mandate was to reveal a new nocturnal face of the site by creating a spectacular immersive experience as part of their winter program.

To answer this, Moment Factory created “Arbora Lumina,” an enchanted 1.2 km night walk that pays homage to the mineral and botanical heritage of the estate. The project was designed to fuse nature and technology, offering visitors a unique, sensory connection to the local history and environment.

From beginning to end, the visitors are enveloped by a fully immersive and spatialised soundscape made of a poetic original soundtrack and nature-inspired soundscapes that awaken the imagination and create a profound dialogue between technology and the natural world.

Here, nature is not a backdrop, but a living material that serves as the starting point for the entire lighting design. Guided by chiaroscuro, light does not aim to reveal everything, but to suggest and sculpt, letting the essential emerge through the night —honoring the site’s mineral and vegetal textures. It unfolds as an impressionistic portrait, where fragments of light, sound, and space come together to evoke the soul of the place. To achieve this, the integration team deployed a complex network of carefully concealed lighting fixtures along the 1.2 km path, ensuring the technology was harmoniously integrated without disrupting the fragile ecosystem or the millennium-old architecture.

Trees are finely illuminated so the light seems to embrace every curve and branch, giving the sense that the forest and the installations are a single living organism. Light moves through the environment, mapping it and transforming it into a living volume—a landscape in motion. In between the trees, a mysterious misty atmosphere is sculpted with an almost calligraphic light. Holographic shapes appear; they drift, dance in rhythm, and architectures of light begin to emerge.

Because of this meticulous integration, the technology completely fades away, giving rise to an organic, almost instinctive sensation—as if nature itself were telling the story of light, and as if the historic Harcourt Castle, sublimated by intense visual contrasts, was becoming nature itself. This artistic approach creates a deeply sensory experience at the threshold between perception and imagination—a natural symphony.

Nine distinct narrative scenes (tableaux) seamlessly integrate the latest multimedia technologies into the natural environment. The entire ecosystem is powered and orchestrated by Moment Factory’s proprietary X-Agora software. Light, moving video projections, music and scenography fuse the real and the imagined, expressing the site’s ancestral duality—between strength and fragility, the mineral and the botanical, and the ephemeral and the permanent.

The primary challenge was integrating modern multimedia technology into a highly sensitive, millennium-old heritage site and iconic arboretum. Arbora Lumina is the first enchanted night walk of its kind to be deployed on a heritage site this ancient, requiring utmost reverence to conserve the original monument.

This required seamless, tailor-made collaboration between Moment Factory’s teams across two continents—in France and Quebec. Deploying a custom 1.2 km path of light demanded an incredibly complex outdoor AV network that elevated the environment rather than overpowering it or disrupting the ecosystem.

Arbora Lumina perfectly demonstrates how innovative AV integration can generate massive tourism and economic impact for regional heritage sites. Serving as the cornerstone of the client’s revitalization strategy, the project was a resounding success, selling more than 68,000 tickets after three months of opening.

As Moment Factory’s third permanent night walk in France, it bridges the gap between ancestral heritage and modern entertainment. By harmoniously fusing light, sound, and nature, it creates a deeply contemplative and immersive experience that proves cutting-edge technology can respectfully and magically re-energize historical landmarks.
