Kansas City’s premier nightclub, Mosaic Ultra Lounge, underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, investing in venue expansion, a new top-tier sound system, enhanced lighting, and elevated DJ booth with sights set on hosting world-renowned DJs.

“My vision has always been to elevate Kansas City nightlife and bring a world-class experience to the Midwest,” said Eric Coomes, strategic partner and resident DJ at Mosaic. “This renovation elevates Mosaic to another level, truly making it one of the premier nightclubs in the country.”

With the prompt to create the first world-class nightclub in this region of the USA, Mosaic’s expert audiovisual designers delivered.

In the effort to transform this nightclub into a premier venue in the country, Definitive Pro Sound, led by Peter Bonavota, looked to 1 SOUND to help deliver sound that enveloped patrons right in this elevated music experience from the second they enter the nightclub.
Definitive Pro Sound designed and installed an exclusive 1 SOUND system, powered by Powersoft, centered around the Contour CT212 loudspeakers paired with SUB2112 subwoofers. This combination forms a 5-way system, which is significant in explaining the sonic fidelity that was achieved in this club, especially impressive at high volumes. This system promotes high intelligibility, where DJ’s can hear their songs as they were originally produced in a studio in a large live setting because of the design of the Contour CT212 and SUB2112 loudspeakers.

The CT212 is a long-throw point source loudspeaker with a max SPL of 145 dB, engineered to maintain extreme clarity without distortion at high volumes. The SUB2112 comprises of two 12” drivers and a 21” driver, which results in deep, impactful bass that is musical, articulate, and fast-responding in the upper bass.

Two CT212s were flown as the main left and right loudspeakers using CT212 Fly Bars, with two SUB2112 subwoofers mounted in the ceiling to deliver deep, room-filling bass across the dance floor.

For supplemental fill coverage, particularly in areas exposed to the club’s open-air layout, marine-grade Cannon C8m loudspeakers were installed using C-Clamps and L-Brackets for flexible aiming. The decision to use weather-resistant loudspeakers ensures that even when the club opens its windows for a hybrid indoor/outdoor space and experiences exposure to outdoor conditions, performance and protection go hand-in-hand.

Inside the DJ booth, the monitoring system is equally powerful. Two Contour CT28 loudspeakers paired with two SUB215 subwoofers were installed using 1 SOUND accessories for clean, integrated mounting, ensuring the artist hears every nuance of their mix, no matter the volume.

The renovated club now features atmospheric LED lighting, a wide selection of CHAUVET Professional fixtures, and a high-resolution LED wall supplied and installed by The LED Studio. Leading the production was Jason Bradley, Director of Production at Kansas City Live!

“We gave the club a full remodel, even changing the routing in and out of the room, and leaned heavily into production to create something you wouldn’t normally see in the Midwest,” said Bradley.

To elevate the visual experience, Bradley allocated a larger portion of the budget to production technology, aligning the venue with clubs in destinations like Las Vegas and Ibiza. Drawing inspiration from LED halos in arenas, he designed an octagonal ceiling centerpiece using Vectorworks. Inside it, nine circular kinetic rings—each housing a moving head—were installed. The structure was hand-built with routed grooves for flush-mounted LED tape.

Bradley partnered with Denver-based Electronic Sales and Production (ESP), with Jason Goetz leading the installation. “I had never designed anything with kinetic lighting before—I wanted to create something unique for a club,” Bradley explained. ESP installed the kinetic rings, each with three winches allowing dynamic movement, while additional LED tape behind the bar tied the design together.
Each ring contains a CHAUVET Professional Rogue Outcast 1 BeamWash, while 12 Maverick Force S Profiles line the octagon’s exterior. Behind the DJ booth, a symmetrical arrangement of Rogue Outcast 1 BeamWash, Color STRIKE M, and COLORado PXL Curve 12 fixtures creates a dynamic visual wall.

“These fixtures are independently controlled and capable of a wide range of patterns—the PXL Curve 12 really stands out,” said Bradley, who collaborated with David Hauss of Hauss Collective. Hauss helped integrate the system for control via the MA Lighting grandMA3.

The LED Studio installed a custom-built EDGE Pro 43” 1.5mm GOB LED screen behind the DJ booth, designed for durability in a high-traffic environment and mounted using bespoke bracketry for a suspended installation.
After months of work, Mosaic stands as one of the city’s premier venues. “These projects are complex,” Bradley reflected, “but everyone involved was willing to go the extra mile to get it done.”

Located in the heart of Kansas City, Mosaic features a dance floor that opens to an outdoor balcony. The audio system needed to deliver exceptional clarity and power while also standing up to the elements when the space transitions into open-air mode. Definitive Pro Sound installed marine-grade Cannon C8m loudspeakers using 1 SOUND’s outdoor-rated accessories.

The high expectations for this nightclub renovation were reliant on the sonic experience guests have when they spend to see a world-class DJ. That’s where Bonavota’s answer for 1 SOUND came in, having been familiar with the sound quality and prior success stories for clubs that have switched to 1 SOUND systems.

The size of the space called for a consideration of what might commonly go towards a line-array approach. However, Bonavota recognized that the depth of the room did not call for a line-array; he was able to go with a point source approach, knowing the SPL capability of a Contour speaker. Bonavota’s point source design approach was also better for achieving even-distribution without problematic reflections in the space, and resulted in actually using fewer speakers because of the Contour’s properties.

“I immediately looked to 1 SOUND because of the compact design, incredible output, aesthetics, and their amazing clarity, with the punch right where it needs to be for electronic music,” said Bonavota. “The design and technology of all 1 SOUND speakers is impressive, and the shape and size of the room called for a point source – the pattern control, coverage, and range of the Contour rival any line array in a single box. Not only that, the look of these speakers also blows away line arrays.”

The lack of distortion translates directly to a better experience for guests, who can enjoy impactful, immersive sound, have conversations without the urge to yell, and have far less ear fatigue over time, encouraging them to stay longer and keep the energy going. Research from previous installations with 1 SOUND has shown the impact of cleaner audio on guest experience and retention, which ultimately results in higher sales for venues, Mosaic’s goal in this investment.

Definitive Pro Sound helps bring a premier nightclub to the midwest utilising 1 SOUND to bring the elevated high-energy experience to life. Not only did they deliver an elevated sound ranking this one of the major nightclubs in the USA, but the system looks incredibly discreet and compact for the energy it produces.

They have created a nightclub that now brings in top-tier names and achieved exactly what Kansas City Power & Light District set out to create through an audio approach that has not been so common in the last few decades, but Definitive Pro Sound did due diligence to understand the ideal solution, which was point source over a line-array.

“The reopening of Mosaic marks a new era for Kansas City nightlife, and our investment in a world-class 1 SOUND audio system reflects that commitment. This custom-designed system sets a new high bar for audio in KC, delivering clarity, power, and an immersive energy that rivals the top nightlife venues in the country. Music is meant to be heard and felt….and this system does both beautifully,” explained Jason Bradley, Director of Entertainment and Production, Kansas City Power & Light District.

After the major production upgrade, Mosaic Nightclub in Kansas City has reopened its doors as the city’s premier nightlife destination with a high-performance 1 SOUND audio system that sets a new bar for club sound in the region. Mosaic‘s new audio system positions it at the forefront of nightlife entertainment.

Whether the dance floor is pulsing indoors or the crowd spills out under the stars, the immersive visual elements and 1 SOUND audio system ensure the party never misses a beat. Mosaic is now an example of the success possible when there is an investment in AV, and it is thoughtfully designed for the human experience.
