Max Watt’s is a live music venue located in Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter, with 500 sq metres of open plan space across two floors and a capacity of 1,500 the venue needed a new PA system that would really pack a punch.
Max Watt’s approached 8th Day Sound to update the venue PA system, with the owners wanting something relatively new to the market in the hope that it would hold them in good stead for the years to come.
The Adamson S10 system had been in the 8th Day Sound inventory for around 18 months, though this was the company’s first permanent venue install with the system.
“Two senior Adamson touring systems technicians collaborated with the support team at Adamson in Canada and came up with a design that met the criteria and fell within budget,” explained Damo Pryor, General Manager of 8th Day Sound.
“We shot the room and drew the plans into Adamson’s Blueprint prediction program and went to work from there.
“The venue has a really diverse calibre of shows on its calendar, each event has its own challenges and the PA system needed to be able to handle the different content whether that’s loud or low SPL, musical, speech, EDM, whatever the scenario,” said Damo.
“Aesthetically the PA needed to be small and unobtrusive, we also wanted to hit the floor and balcony from the same array although there is a 10ft gap. I think we managed to tick each of those boxes.”
The line array is split with a steel rope, to get around the gap between the balcony and floor. It required a few re-designs to ensure the array would still take effect in both locations. The E119 subwoofers are located under the stage allowing the barrier to be as close to the down stage edge as possible.
Lab.gruppen PLM12K and PLM20K amplifiers were selected along with a Lake LM44 processer. The venue supplies AVID mixing consoles, which most touring acts have a show file for and are familiar with.
“The Adamson loudspeaker was ideal for this venue, it’s a new product on the market so the system will be relevant for years to come, plenty of power for its size and weight, it meets the budget and its important that touring artists see the brand on the venues technical paperwork and are happy to use it.”
