The Kelpies, 30-metre-high horse head sculptures between Falkirk and Grangemouth in Scotland, have become an iconic landmark and tourist attraction that transforms at night through architectural lighting.

Scottish Canals commissioned Adlib to replace the original lighting fixtures and electrical infrastructure with a modern, energy-efficient solution to enhance visual impact, ensure durability, reduce maintenance, and create dynamic lighting effects.

Adlib built lighting control cabinets off-site before integrating them into the existing infrastructure with new RCBOs and low voltage distribution for the signalling system.

The team installed Studio Due PARLED300 PRO DRS fixtures—IP 67-rated wash LED lights designed for outdoor architectural applications—with minimal disruption and full compliance with safety regulations.

An ETCnomad control system enables customisable lighting sequences and direct control of individual fixtures inside the heads.

The main challenge during this installation was integrating lighting control cabinets into the existing electrical infrastructure. The Adlib team built the cabinets off-site before integrating them into the existing infrastructure with new RCBOs and low-voltage distribution for the signalling system.

The Kelpies architectural lighting installation is an excellent example of how modern technology can elevate public art and enrich cultural heritage by merging innovative lighting solutions with sustainability and public engagement.
