Iconic London nightclub, Ministry of Sound, recently carried out a complete renovation of its main room, The Box. As the venue approached its 35th anniversary, they were keen for a complete refurbishment, including the first upgrade to the sound system in fifteen years.

Recognised as the home of UK dance music, the new sound system would need to deliver high-quality, full-coverage audio that meets the demands of world-class DJs, live audiences, and dynamic events. To supply and install an audio solution worthy of the job, Ministry of Sound turned to Patchwork London – global distributor for touring and live events.

Patchwork evaluated several options for Ministry of Sound’s new system, overcoming complex acoustic constraints presented by the scale of The Box by determining that a point-source solution best suited the space. Through extensive testing, stakeholder demonstrations and on-site listening sessions, KV2 Audio was ultimately selected as the most effective solution to deliver high-impact clarity, consistency, and performance.

The sound system was delivered across three zones: The Box, the DJ booth and the VIP area. The main room now operates a six-point loudspeaker system with KV2 SL412 units flown at the front, middle and rear of the room, supported by eight VHD4.21 and six VHD2.16 subwoofers providing tightly controlled low-frequency reinforcement. The DJ booth is equipped with two ESD312 monitors with four ES1.8 subwoofers for accurate and detailed monitoring. In the VIP area, ESD10 loudspeakers with ESD1.12 subwoofers and four ESD12 units ensure consistently clear, balanced coverage.

All loudspeakers are powered by KV2 electronics housed in three custom amplifier racks, also integrating two QSC Q-SYS Core X10 processors and a PC NUC enabling secure remote access, monitoring and system management. The racks further include real-time system monitoring displays, alongside AV Line NETGEAR switches for primary and secondary Dante networking, with a DirectOut Andiamo unit for audio interfacing.

Beyond The Box, Patchwork implemented venue-wide infrastructure upgrades designed to futureproof Ministry of Sound’s control ecosystem.

The previous control system was replaced with the QSC Q-SYS platform, enabling centralised signal routing, system monitoring, and cross-room interoperability. Each room now has a custom input/output panel run via Dante, allowing technical staff to analyse performance, detect faults and initiate Patchwork’s remote troubleshooting to improve operational reliability.

The platform also offers future potential for lighting and video control, managed via intuitive touchscreen interfaces in the front of house and secondary spaces.

Having selected a new loudspeaker manufacturer, the integration itself faced a challenging delivery deadline. The refurbishment of The Box began on January 7th, with reopening weekend tickets already on sale for January 30th.

As well as the new sound system, a redesigned dance floor, modular DJ booth, and large-scale lighting and video installations were taking place simultaneously, requiring Patchwork to coordinate with multiple contractors while adapting to constantly evolving site conditions and access restrictions.

Further challenges emerged when changes to the lighting rig altered the original loudspeaker design. The DJ booth was also repositioned, resulting in the creation of a VIP viewing platform behind it, introducing a completely new audio zone. Working in close collaboration with KV2’s Jonathan Reece, Patchwork swiftly reengineered the audio design to maintain coverage and coherence across all areas.

From initial concept discussions to the last-minute commissioning before reopening, Patchwork delivered a transformative sound system that balances raw club energy with precision engineering, operational control, and scalability. The installation not only enhances the sonic impact of club nights but also supports Ministry of Sound’s growing programme of corporate events and conferences, which now account for approximately half of the venue’s operations.

Reopening weekend provided a high-profile demonstration of the new system’s performance and resilience. Headline DJ sets from international artists showcased the system’s dynamic range, clarity, and power, while audiences enjoyed the immersive, physically engaging listening experience.

This project represents a landmark moment in the history of Ministry of Sound, marking the transition from its long-standing loudspeaker partner to a brand-new KV2 Audio solution.

Delivered with exceptional technical coordination, design flexibility, and flawless execution despite the pressure of last-minute design changes and extremely tight deadlines, Patchwork London’s work establishes a new benchmark for large-scale nightclub audio.

The upgrades and futureproofing of The Box are set to define a new era of nightclub sound in London and beyond.
