FedEx Forum, home to the Memphis Grizzlies, has undergone a major audio system upgrade led by Solotech in partnership with WJHW, replacing the original 2004 system with a modern, high-performance solution. At the core of the upgrade is an L-Acoustics Kara IIi system, delivering powerful, even coverage while maintaining a compact footprint. The setup includes eight arrays of 15 Kara IIi speakers, powered by LA7.16i amplified controllers, with KS28 subwoofers driven by LA12X amps. Additional X12 coaxial enclosures provide clear audio for upper-tier seating, while X15 speakers beneath the scoreboard ensure full-court coverage. The system also features an AVB audio network with a Dante fallback for seamless audio distribution, a Rivage PM5 audio console for advanced mixing, and a Q-Sys interface for complete system control. A key advantage is its hot-swappable amplifier capability, allowing new amp units tobe replaced without losing settings—ensuring minimal downtime, with the only delay being how quickly a technician reaches the control room. The upgrade significantly enhances speech intelligibility and consistency, meeting NBA audio standards. The discreet design integrates seamlessly into the arena’s rigging infrastructure, covering two-thirds of the venue floor while maintaining a clean aesthetic.

The new PA system debuted on 26th October, during the Grizzlies’ match against the Orlando Magic, instantly improving the matchday atmosphere. It has since been used for major concerts, including Billy Strings, Jhené Aiko, Justin Timberlake, and Maxwell, demonstrating its versatility for both sport and live events.Seth Tackett, Senior Director of Arena Operations, praised the upgrade, highlighting how it has transformed the experience for fans, ensuring world-class sound quality. The project reinforces Solotech’s expertise in high-performance AV solutions, securing FedExForum’s reputation as a top entertainment venue.

With its modernised sound system, FedExForum now offers exceptional clarity, impact, and reliability, creating an immersive experience for Grizzlies fans and concert goers alike.

The installation of the new PA system at FedExForum, home to the Memphis Grizzlies, presented several major challenges, requiring precise coordination and expert problem-solving.

1. Rigging Grid Construction

One of the biggest challenges was that the PA system had to be installed at the same time as an entirely new, arena wide, rigging grid. This meant that the audio system needed to be integrated into a structure that was still being built. To overcome this, detailed planning and real-time coordination between the rigging and AV teams were essential. Solotech worked closely with contractors to ensure all components were delivered and installed in phases that aligned with the rigging progress.

2. Logistical Challenges at Extreme Heights

The high steel deck was positioned at 185ft, while the rigging grid was at 110ft. All audio components had to be installed at the highest level and then carefully fed through the lower deck, which posed a significant logistical and safety challenge. To address this, specialist lifting equipment and precise scheduling were used to move and position the equipment efficiently. Solotech’s team, experienced in working at extreme heights, employed rigging techniques and safety protocols to ensure a seamless installation without disrupting the ongoing construction work.

3. Tight Timeframe and NBA Compliance

The installation had a strict deadline, starting in June 2024 and needing completion by 21st August – just weeks before the NBA’s 6th September testing deadline. If the PA system wasn’t fully operational, FedExForum risked a significant fine from the NBA. To mitigate this, Solotech implemented a fast-track workflow, deploying multiple teams working simultaneously to complete different aspects of the installation. Pre-assembly and testing were done off-site wherever possible to minimise on-site work time.

Through meticulous planning, expert execution, and close collaboration with stakeholders, the installation was completed on time and to the highest standards, ensuring seamless audio performance for both sports and entertainment events at FedExForum.

The FedExForum PA system upgrade stands as a benchmark in technical innovation, execution under pressure, and transformative impact—qualities that make it a worthy winner of a MONDO-DR Award.

Unmatched Audio Quality and Coverage

The L-Acoustics Kara IIi system has set a new standard for consistency and clarity in a large-scale arena environment. Mark Graham, Principal at WJHW, described it as the “most consistent sounding room he’s heard in a long time”, a testament to the precise tuning, even coverage, and advanced system design. Compared to the twenty year old previous point-source system, this upgrade delivers unparalleled balance, intelligibility, and power, ensuring every seat in the venue experiences the same immersive sound.

Seamless Integration with a Complex Construction Timeline

This installation was uniquely challenging, as the PA system had to be integrated with an entirely new rigging grid while it was being built. With high steel at 185ft and the rigging grid at 110ft, the Solotech team navigated extreme logistical constraints, deploying specialist lifting techniques, real-time coordination with contractors, and precision engineering. Despite these challenges, the project was delivered on time and without compromise—a testament to the team’s expertise and adaptability.

State-of-the-Art Technology & Flexibility

The system is designed for both live sport and entertainment, featuring an AVB audio network with a Dante fallback, a Rivage PM5 console for advanced mixing, and a Q-Sys interface for complete system control. The addition of hot-swappable amplifier capabilities ensures minimal downtime in case of failures, reinforcing the system’s reliability for high-profile NBA events and concerts.

Transformational Impact on the Venue

The upgrade has elevated FedExForum into an elite-tier venue for both sport and entertainment. It debuted successfully on 26th October during the Memphis Grizzlies vs. Orlando Magic game, instantly improving the matchday experience. Since then, it has supported major concerts, further proving its versatility and quality.

Antonio Monaco, Director of Capital & Special Projects with the Memphis Grizzlies, praised Solotech for going “above and beyond”, and that is exactly why this project deserves a MONDO-DR Award. It is a gold standard in arena audio excellence, overcoming significant challenges to deliver world-class results.
