Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore undertook a major technical infrastructure upgrade to enhance flexibility across its multiple performance spaces. The brief called for versatile, high-performance fixtures capable of supporting a diverse year-round programme of over 4,000 events.

The solution included 170 Robe fixtures: PAINTE Fresnel and Profile, ESPRITE Fresnel and Profile, FOOTSIE LED footlights, and T32 Slim Cyc lights.

The purchase was the culmination of a collaboration between Robe Asia Pacific and the Robe R&D and production teams in the Czech Republic, especially with the development of the PAINTE Fresnel.

Each fixture type was chosen based on how they could enhance Esplanade’s overall flexibility and ability to offer a diversity of staging configurations.

Both PAINTE and ESPRITE feature Robe’s trailblazing TE (TRANSFERABLE ENGINE) technology, which allows LED engines to be replaced or swapped out – in approximately 5 to 7 minutes – for another or an engine with different characteristics appropriate to the application. This can significantly increase the lifespan of the fixtures.

One of the primary challenges was meeting the highly specific technical and operational requirements of a world-class, multi-venue performing arts centre with a demanding year-round schedule. The fixtures needed to deliver exceptional performance while integrating seamlessly into an existing and diverse lighting infrastructure.

Additionally, the development and delivery timeline was extremely tight. This required close coordination between Robe’s Asia Pacific team and its global R&D and production teams in the Czech Republic to ensure the product met Esplanade’s precise specifications within the required timeframe.

This challenge was overcome through a highly collaborative approach.

The selection and deployment of 170 Robe fixtures has significantly enhanced the venue’s ability to accommodate a wide range of artistic and technical demands.

The integration of TE (TRANSFERABLE ENGINE) technology represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainability and longevity, reducing long-term costs and environmental impact.

The project highlights a truly global collaboration – bringing together teams from Asia and Europe to develop and deliver a customised solution under tight timelines. The successful outcome demonstrates Robe’s commitment to innovation, responsiveness, and customer-focused design.

This installation elevates the creative potential of a landmark cultural institution, enabling world-class performances with greater flexibility and efficiency.
