Named the #1 Resort Hotel in the U.S. and California by Travel + Leisure’s 2024 World’s Best Awards, Mission Pacific Beach Resort in Oceanside, California blends modern luxury with laid-back coastal charm. At its heart is The Rooftop Bar, where guests enjoy craft cocktails and panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean. Following a recent renovation, The Rooftop Bar sought to upgrade its audio system ahead of an upcoming event — improving sound quality while preserving the bar’s sophisticated design. Featuring a vaulted wood ceiling and large woven light fixture, the solution needed to be sonically powerful yet visually seamless.

Mission Pacific turned to Essential Communications, led by David Schwartz, for a custom, high-fidelity solution. Drawing from prior success with James Loudspeaker, Schwartz worked closely with their team to engineer a bespoke solution tailored to The Rooftop Bar. The design utilized James Loudspeaker’s Maverick Series, typically used in ultra-high-output home theater environments, for its exceptional fidelity and flexibility.
To meet the bar’s aesthetic standards, James crafted custom enclosures finished in a bamboo-inspired veneer, carefully matched to the surrounding materials. A veneer swatch book was provided so the resort’s design team could select the perfect finish. The collaboration included an on-site design session at James’s Minden, Nevada headquarters, where Schwartz and the engineering team fine-tuned acoustic performance and visual details before installation.
The new system includes loudspeakers and subwoofers mounted symmetrically on both sides of the bar, with subwoofer and loudspeaker cabinets matched in width to reinforce a clean, handcrafted aesthetic. Every component — from cabinet dimensions to material finishes to custom bracketry — was purpose-built for The Rooftop Bar.
As General Manager Duane Holder describes it: “The custom audio solution here is subtle, powerful, and intentionally integrated into the architecture. It’s seamless, and that’s the point. Guests feel it before they consciously register it.” Management reports that guests linger longer, spend more, and return more often.

Following a recent renovation, The Rooftop Bar sought to upgrade its audio system while preserving its sophisticated design. Featuring a vaulted wood ceiling and a large woven light fixture, the audio solution needed to be sonically powerful yet fit in visually with the upscale atmosphere. Conventional speaker options clashed with the refined coastal design, prompting the team to seek a custom-built solution.
Mission Pacific turned to Essential Communications, led by David Schwartz, who drew from prior success with James Loudspeaker to engineer a bespoke solution. James Loudspeaker’s customization capabilities allowed the team to fulfill their vision without compromising on either sound or visuals. As Schwartz explains: “I had a concept for the space, and I knew James Loudspeakers could deliver on it.”
To meet the bar’s aesthetic standards, James crafted custom enclosures finished in a bamboo-inspired veneer, carefully matched to the surrounding materials — with a veneer swatch book provided so the resort’s design team could select the perfect finish. An on-site design session at James’s Minden, Nevada headquarters allowed the engineering team to fine-tune acoustic performance and visual details, ensuring everything was optimized before installation began.
The system also had a firm deadline, needing to be fully operational ahead of a scheduled event at The Rooftop Bar — requiring close coordination across Essential Communications, the James Loudspeaker engineering team, and the resort’s management to align timelines, finishes, and logistics simultaneously.

This project showcases the strength of creative collaboration between Mission Pacific Beach Resort, Essential Communications, and James Loudspeaker. From concept to completion, the partnership produced an audio experience that matches the visual beauty of the venue and elevates it even further.
The level of customization is exceptional. Unlike off-the-shelf alternatives, every component of this system was purpose-built for The Rooftop Bar — from the cabinet dimensions to material finishes to custom bracketry. James Loudspeaker’s customization capabilities allowed the team to fulfill a vision that no standard product could have achieved, without compromising on either sound or aesthetics.
The results speak for themselves. As Duane Holder, General Manager of The Rooftop Bar, puts it: “The right audio changes everything. It shapes tempo and flow, fuels connection, and elevates the overall atmosphere. We’ve noticed guests linger longer, spend more, and return more often — all subtle outcomes of a space that simply feels right.” The Rooftop Bar has become a cornerstone of Oceanside’s cultural revival, and the audio experience is central to its identity.
The project also reflects outstanding partnership at every stage. By involving Essential Communications and James Loudspeaker from the earliest design phases — including a dedicated engineering session in Nevada — the team resolved acoustic, aesthetic, and logistical challenges before installation began, meeting a firm event deadline without compromise.
Finally, this installation serves one of the most recognized hospitality properties in the country. Mission Pacific Beach Resort was named the #1 Resort Hotel in the U.S. and California by Travel + Leisure’s 2024 World’s Best Awards. The Rooftop Bar is central to that recognition. A MONDO-DR Award would recognize not just outstanding custom audio, but the broader truth this project embodies: “From the beginning, we knew audio wasn’t just a utility — it was a pillar in shaping the guest journey.” (Duane Holder, General Manager, The Rooftop Bar.)
