A new Robe moving light rig has been installed in the 800-capacity ‘Liquid Lounge’ main theatre space aboard the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship, which stages a host of large-scale production shows, themed performances, and other entertainment events.

The brief called for bright, durable and versatile LED fixtures capable of supporting high-energy, Broadway-style productions in a demanding maritime environment.

The lighting upgrade included the installation of 84 Robe moving lights – 40 x PAINTE Spots, 34 x LEDBeam 350s and 10 x FORTES, selected for their output, reliability and compact form.

Brightness was a prerequisite as the theatre now has a large LED backdrop and digital scenery as opposed to previously when it worked with traditional backdrops and cloths, and obviously, they were looking at installing an all-LED rig.

PAINTE appealed on size and weight and because it has a sealed optical chamber which helps protect the optics from dust, smoke residue and other detritus, making the units easier to clean and maintain.

They are installed on the over-stage bars with some upstage on the deck, with the LEDBeam 350s also part of the overhead rig. FORTES are in the front positions, used for follow spotting and key lighting.

A key technological advantage for the team was Robe’s TE (TRANSFERABLE ENGINE) technology, which extends fixture lifespan and ensures long-term serviceability. This is particularly valuable in a cruise environment, where reliability and reduced maintenance are critical.

The result is a highly robust and adaptable lighting system that significantly enhances production value, delivering brighter, sharper, and more immersive visual experiences while maintaining operational efficiency and consistency.

One of the primary challenges was selecting fixtures capable of performing reliably in the unique conditions of a cruise ship environment. Exposure to vibration, humidity, and airborne particulates requires robust, low-maintenance equipment that can withstand continuous use.

The decision-making process itself was also rigorous, involving multiple demonstrations with different manufacturers and input from lighting designers across the Carnival Cruise Line fleet. The goal was to identify “workhorse” fixtures that could meet both creative and operational demands.#

These challenges were overcome through thorough evaluation and collaboration, and the Robe fixtures stood out for their combination of brightness, durability, and innovative features such as sealed optics and TE technology. Their proven reliability on other vessels, including prior installations within the fleet, provided additional confidence.

Installation was completed efficiently within a tight 10-day window during dry dock, coordinated by experienced technical teams, ensuring minimal disruption and a seamless transition.

This project should win because the new Robe fixtures deliver a significant leap in production quality, enabling visually stunning, high-energy performances that rival land-based theatres. The installation supports an intensive schedule of shows, requiring exceptional reliability, flexibility and ease of use.

The previous Carnival Magic installation was the first time the team recalls having a lighting system that worked 100 percent straight out of the box and has continued to do so for over a year, encouraging them to return to Robe.

The new Robe products aboard the Carnival Sunshine have made a massive difference to productions and productivity, setting high standards for cruise ship entertainment lighting.
