The London West Hollywood  at Beverly Hills is renowned for its luxury and refinement, offering a range of upscale amenities. The crown jewel of the hotel is its West End Rooftop, a sprawling 107 ft by 40 ft open-air space that hosts high-profile events, weddings, and corporate functions.

Sound from rooftop events often spilled beyond the property, causing complaints from nearby residents. To address this challenge without compromising guest experience, the hotel partnered with Russ DuBrow at Electronic Technology to install a new audio solution centred around Renkus-Heinz’s IC Live X Series loudspeakers, delivering powerful sound and controlled coverage.

Following a detailed site assessment and acoustic modelling, Electronic Technology determined that a steerable array solution would provide the level of directional control required for the rooftop environment. Renkus-Heinz’s IC Live X Series loudspeakers feature steerable technology that allows sound to be precisely directed, ensuring maximum coverage within the designated event space while preventing sound spillage.

Four ICLX units were mounted along the back wall at intervals of 25 ft, each placed 12 ft above the ground, designed to provide a single, consistent zone of audio and ensure perfectly even sound distribution throughout the rooftop.

Complementing the ICLX loudspeakers are two SA112 subwoofers, which provide deep and impactful low end. The entire system was configured using Renkus-Heinz’s RHAON II platform, a powerful digital tool that enables precise adjustments to EQ settings, delay, and SPL placement. By digitally steering the sound using Renkus-Heinz’s OmniBeam software algorithm (part of RHAON II) and tailoring it to the venue’s acoustic characteristics, the installation team created a system capable of delivering clarity, power, and control.

“The IC Live X speakers allowed us to direct sound exactly where we needed: below the glass walls and concentrating the sound in the approximate middle while completely avoiding areas where it wasn’t wanted,” said DuBrow. “This level of control was critical for solving the noise complaints that had been an ongoing issue.”

The upgraded audio system has transformed the rooftop experience at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills. Complaints from neighbours have virtually disappeared, and the hotel has not faced further issues with city noise ordinances. Guests and event organizers have praised the improved sound quality, noting its clarity and balance even during high-energy events. DJs and performers benefit from the system’s adaptability, as it provides exceptional audio for both live music and spoken word presentations.

The primary challenge for the installation team was to design a sound system capable of delivering high-quality audio for guests while tightly controlling where that sound travelled. The large rooftop’s elevated position and lack of natural acoustic boundaries meant that sound from events could easily travel beyond the property, creating noise concerns for nearby residents and increasing pressure to comply with local sound regulations.

At the same time, the system still needed to deliver a premium audio experience suitable for a luxury hospitality venue, where music and entertainment play a central role in the guest experience. Achieving this balance between powerful sound for events and precise sound containment was a key design challenge.

In addition, the solution had to integrate discreetly with the rooftop’s carefully curated aesthetic. As a high-end hospitality destination, the venue required a sound system that would not disrupt the visual design of the space or dominate the architecture.

To address these challenges, Electronic Technology implemented a system centred around Renkus-Heinz IC Live X Series steerable loudspeakers. Their beam-steering capabilities allow sound to be precisely directed toward the audience areas while reducing spill into neighbouring properties, delivering powerful and consistent coverage across the rooftop while maintaining good relationships with the surrounding community. The compact, unobtrusive ICLX was an ideal choice for the rooftop venue, where maintaining the clean architectural design was just as important as delivering quality sound.

The London West Hollywood rooftop project stands out because it successfully solves a complex real-world challenge while preserving the premium experience expected from a luxury hospitality venue. It demonstrates how precision beam-steering technology can enable hospitality venues in dense urban environments to deliver exceptional audio experiences while maintaining responsible sound control.

Rather than reducing the venue’s ability to host vibrant events, the installation team at Electronic Technology designed a system that could deliver powerful, high-quality audio while precisely controlling where that sound travelled. Using Renkus-Heinz IC Live X Series steerable loudspeakers, the system focuses sound directly toward audience areas while preventing spill into nearby residential properties. By delivering precise coverage with fewer loudspeakers than the previous system, the installation also improved system efficiency while keeping a clean architectural aesthetic.

This project demonstrates how advanced audio technology can solve acoustic challenges that would otherwise limit a venue’s operation. The solution delivers clear, consistent coverage across the rooftop while using fewer loudspeakers than the previous system, improving both aesthetics and efficiency. The installation also protects the venue’s reputation and future viability through thoughtful system design and a clear understanding of operational needs.

“The difference is night and day,” DuBrow confirms. “Not only does the system deliver incredible sound for guests, but it also keeps the hotel out of trouble with neighbours and city authorities. It’s a win for everyone involved. The IC Live X Series gave us the tools to create something special, and the London Hotel rooftop is now a space that impresses guests and respects the community. That’s exactly what we set out to achieve.”
