The challenge faced by Level One in Sydney’s iconic Plaza hotel was to create a venue recognised around the world for its sound system. To achieve this, Level One needed a solution that would provide an all-encompassing sound system to provide an immersive experience on the dance floor, while also sounding as good at 4am as it did at 9pm.

The historic venue set Xcite Audio Visual and Technical Audio Group the challenge of turning this architecturally significant space into a top nightclub focused on superior sound quality for international DJs and performers. The team needed to create a consistent, high-performance sound field across various spaces, from the energetic dance floor to quieter VIP areas.

The solution came via Martin Audio’s WPL line arrays. A total of 24 WPL cabinets were deployed in six stacks, providing 360° immersive sound with uniform coverage across the dance floor.

To complement the WPL arrays, 18 SXH218 hybrid subwoofers were used in a six-stack array. These subs are crossed over at 80Hz, allowing them to focus purely on delivering deep, powerful low-frequency energy. Above this, the WPL’s horn-loaded dual 12-inch drivers provide an exceptionally fast transient response, particularly in the 80-100Hz range, where the percussive impact of a kick drum is most crucial. This separation ensures that the sub-bass remains tight and controlled, while the upper bass frequencies retain speed and attack. The system maintains absolute precision, ensuring every bass hit lands with maximum clarity and definition.

For VIP and bar areas, 16 THS 15-inch 3-way coaxial cabinets were installed to maintain consistent, high-fidelity sound throughout the venue, ensuring seamless sound transition from the energetic main floor to the more intimate spaces.

The system is powered by Martin Audio’s iKON amplifiers, offering precise DSP control and exceptional headroom, ensuring optimal performance at the high SPL levels required for a top-tier nightclub.

Finally, careful attention to vibration control was achieved using Embelton spring isolation and custom floor mounts, minimising structural impact and ensuring the preservation of the heritage building.

Plaza’s transformation into a premier nightclub within a heritage-listed building demonstrates how high-performance audio can thrive in architecturally complex environments. This project showcases meticulous sound engineering, delivering clarity and immersion while respecting the integrity of one of Sydney’s most iconic venues.

What sets Plaza apart is the careful balance between powerful, dynamic sound and precise control within a historically sensitive space. The system was designed to ensure every frequency is delivered with clarity, allowing the venue to host high-energy performances while maintaining accuracy across multiple genres.

A key challenge was providing impactful sound without compromising the building’s structure or transmitting vibrations to neighbouring properties. The system’s placement and tuning were carefully planned to manage low-end frequencies effectively, preserving both the venue’s physical integrity and acoustic performance.

By integrating Martin Audio’s advanced technology with strategic acoustic treatments, Plaza achieves consistent, high-quality sound across all areas—from the energetic main dance floor to more intimate VIP spaces. This ensures an immersive experience for every guest, regardless of location.

Plaza exemplifies how modern audio solutions can be seamlessly integrated into heritage venues, proving that outstanding sound quality and architectural preservation can go hand in hand. Its careful execution and innovative approach make it a strong contender for the MONDO-DR Nightclub Award.
